Fall Saturdays are great for a lot of reasons. There’s a crispness to the air, the colors are gorgeous, and when the Huskers play night games on the road, you’ve got time to let yourself be inspired by the pumpkins and leaves and spices to have a fun craft day. And with Halloween just around the corner (and people stopping by your house — even if they’re just in search of a Snickers, it can still look nice!), there’s no better time to do some crafting to add a little something to your home exterior. After all, nothing goes better with a gorgeous new roof than something fun for the front stoop! So here’s a little roundup of some fun, simple DIYs you can try.
Monogrammed pumpkins
Pick up a few pumpkins of different colors and sizes, either from the grocery store or after a weekend trip to an area pumpkin patch. Use different fonts (you can print a stencil with your favorites) to etch, carve, or paint your last initial for an easy, pretty display on your front stoop.
Painted pumpkin pallet
A re-purposed pallet makes a fun alternative to a traditional jack-o-lantern! Paint a big pumpkin and prop it up on your porch for a smash-proof Halloween!
Glowing gourds
Pick up a few lanterns from a home supply or craft store, and a bunch of mini pumpkins and gourds of various sizes from the grocery store or farmer’s market. Group a lantern with a few gourds on each step of your front stoop to light the way for trick-or-treaters.
Fall inspired wreath

Corn garland
Get into the Cornhusker spirit! Screw some eye hooks into pretty seasonal corn cobs, then thread a rope through the eyes. Add folded-over corn husks between cobs for a pretty bunting, and hang the garland on your house exterior or fence (bonus: it’ll be a nice treat for the local neighborhood critters!).
Chalk up a welcome
Find a pretty handled serving tray at a thrift shop or garage sale, and brush on some chalkboard paint to the center. Add some seasonal decorations, like leaves and branches, and write a greeting for your front door. This is one you can repurpose with new decor for any season!
Pinecone hanger
This is an easy, really cheap one! Collect a few pinecones, and pick up a roll of wide ribbon. Cut the ribbon into a few different lengths, glue one end of each piece to a pinecone, and collect the other ends into a knot. Hang your pinecone gathering on a hook or nail for a simple, pretty nature-inspired door hanger.
