It’s hard to believe, but summer is coming to a close already. Whether in-person or remote, the kids are back in school. White Castle Roofing has a few months to go yet before we hang up our roofing felt for the winter, and we’ll still be busy at work taking care of our friends’ and neighbors’ roofs until well after the first frost. So of course we’re still going strong scheduling roofs, and if you’re one of the folks we’re calling to let you know we’re coming soon, there are a few things you can do to help prep your home to make for a smoother experience for everyone. And it’s something the whole family can get involved in!

Teach them while they are young!

Whether your kids are home full-time, or it’s their home days on the 3/2 schedule, they can still help out at lunch or between classes with a few simple tasks that will help get your home ready for your roofing project.

  1. Mow the lawn. Older kids can run the lawnmower, but younger kids can help too by helping to pick up outdoor toys or lawn games. Having a newly-trimmed yard, free of stray toys, can help in the clean-up process to ensure that no roofing debris gets lost among the grass or game sets.
  2. Remove valuable items from interior walls and/or your yard. The kids can get involved here, too, picking up garden gnomes or gazing balls, and helping take down a favorite picture or wall hanging. We always take care to protect your property, but rare accidents can happen during the shingle drop-off and roofing process. Making sure any valuable items are off walls or out of the yard can serve as a safeguard to keep your property protected.
  3. Make signs to identify power outlets outside of your house. Our equipment requires power to run, so we appreciate the tip in finding where to plug it in! Of course if power won’t be available, we ask that you let us know in advance so we can make other preparations to provide it, but if we have access via your home’s exterior, we’d love seeing your kids’ handiwork to point it out to us!

When the roof protects the whole house, and everyone in it, it can be fun to include everyone in its replacement. And if you need an estimate to get the ball rolling on a new roof for your house, you still have plenty of time to request one today!
